This method will upgrade your Xiaomi MI 3 to Developer Rom and will enable the root access of your phone. This will change your MiUI version from Stable ROM KXDxxxxx to Developer ROM MiUI 4.x.xx so I suggest to do a backup first of your phone. Your current setup and personal files will be left as is.

Upgrading Xiaomi MI 3 to Developer Rom
1. Download the latest MiUI Developer ROM. Select WCDMA/CDMA CHINA then click on the green button under Developer ROM
2. Once downloaded, save the ROM in the root directory of your SD card.
3. Open 'updater app'
4. Once opened, tap the menu button
5. Select 'Select update package'
6. Go to the root directory of your SD card and choose the ROM file that you've downloaded
7. Select 'update'. It will prompt if you want to make a backup. It's up to you if you want to or not. Wait until finished updating.
9. Reboot your MI3.
11. Once rebooted, go to security>permission> and enable root permission
12. Cheers! You may now enjoy you Xiaomi MI3 running in Developer Rom with root access.
