This device which will make any flat surface 'smart' has taken Kickstarter by storm
The era of smart devices is upon us and Kickstarter is the place to be when you want to fund your dream. Turns out that a device by the name of Knocki is able to transform a regular surface into a smart surface and what’s more is that their Kickstarter campaign was a huge success. The team behind Knocki has managed to raise $35,000 in just 60 minutes and according to Engadget, they were able to accumulate a total of $136,000.
According to the brains behind Knocki, the device can turn any surface into a controller for various gadgets and smart devices in your home. For example, if a Knocki is attached to a table, a countertop or a wall, it can recognize up to 10 unique tapping and knocking patterns.
For instance, three quick knocks on the wall could switch on the lights, while two could activate the thermostat and a couple of slow taps on the bedside table could activate the coffeemaker while still snoozing in bed, and wake up with a completely fresh cup of your favorite coffee.
Moreover, a knock on your door could send you a text message that someone has visited your home.
The device uses non-acoustic sensor technology, so it doesn’t get confused with random sounds. According to the creators, the device is quite sophisticated because it can differentiate between random vibrations and deliberate knocks.
Knocki works with Nest, Philips Hue, Wemo, Samsung Smartthings as well as applications like Spotify and Gmail. If your home does not fit the category of a smart home, it can still effortlessly control phones and other Wi-Fi connected appliances ranging from speakers and alarm clocks. The sensor carries a price tag of $69 and if everything goes according to plan, Knocki will soon be present in the household of a gadget lover during the month of December.
