Mozilla releases Stumbler App for smartphones to track your whereabouts using WiFi sniffer.

Mozilla released its latest App, Stumbler for smartphones which will use a WiFi sniffer to geolocate its users across the globe. With this release, Mozilla enters into tracking its users without their knowledge-a territory previously entered by Google and Apple - a very controversial move.

WiFi sniffer for Android

How the app does work, is by detecting your location via WiFi, cell towers, etc and then uses them to pinpoint your location on the map. The benefits of this, is passed onto Mozilla's Firefox OS and other open source projects. In plain terms, any App can now track your location at any point in time.

Mozilla is even encouraging users to walk the road less travelled in a bid to improve its mapping service which currently is in its nascent stage.

Opt Out

This feature doesn't seem to have an opt in option. Instead there appears to be an indirect way to opt out of it. Mozilla advises that it's possible to opt out of being slurped by Stumbler by adding “_nomap” to the end of an SSID's name. The foundation says “This approach is used by other companies offering similar services” so Mozilla feels this approach is good enough. Although, how many users even know how to go about doing this, is another question altogether.

Murky Past

As mentioned earlier, Google had also tried this in the past and got tangled in controversy because the company tried to track users right under their nose and without their knowledge. The controversy arose when Google refused to admit which data is stored and which was eradicated.

Mozilla is taking this one step further by giving its users the initiative.

Though Mozilla, unlike Google doesn't use this data for advertising purposes, its still plenty of fodder for privacy activists to scream about.

1. Download the latest MiUI Developer ROM. Select WCDMA/CDMA CHINA then click on the green button under Developer ROM
2. Once downloaded, save the ROM in the root directory of your SD card.
3. Open 'updater app'
4. Once opened, tap the menu button
5. Select 'Select update package'
6. Go to the root directory of your SD card and choose the ROM file that you've downloaded
7. Select 'update'. It will prompt if you want to make a backup. It's up to you if you want to or not. Wait until finished updating.
9. Reboot your MI3.
11. Once rebooted, go to security>permission> and enable root permission

A new $49.00 Adapter kit to let users use their Kinect for Xbox One sensors to work with Windows 8 PCs

Ever wished you could use your Kinect with your Windows PC rather than just your XBox? Well, Microsoft will now let you do that. Microsoft has announced it will be selling an adapter which will let users connect their Windows machines running on version 8 and above, to a Kinect.

Microsoft is making available a $49.00 (Rs.3000.00) adapter kit that will allow Kinect for Xbox One sensors available for use with Windows 8/8.1 PCs and tablets.

Apps galore

It has also announced that it is for the very first time, allowing Kinect Apps for Windows to be sold on the Windows App Store. The first of those commercially available apps are available today, including Nayi Disha, a series of interactive apps for early childhood education; YAKiT, a 2D/3D character design app; and Microsoft's own 3D Builder, which allows users to scan people or objects and create a 3D print of that model.

No backwards compatibility

Sadly, this adapter will only work for the new Kinect. So users who thought they could use the Kinect they bought with their XBox 360 are out of luck. It requires a USB 3.0 port to work, which rules the older Kinect out of the picture.

The adapter is set to be sold in the coming weeks in 41 countries. The current Kinect for Windows sensor v2 (which doesn't require the $49.00 adapter kit) is available for $199.99 (Rs.12000.00) which is a tad expensive.

Version 1 of the Kinect for Windows sensor looked like the Kinect for Xbox sensor, but was designed to work at closer range and to work with Windows 7/8/8.1 PCs. The second version of the Kinect for Windows sensor, also designed to work at close range, works only with Windows 8 and 8.1.

Microsoft also is making its Kinect for Windows software development kit (SDK) 2.0 is available today which you can download from here. There are no fees for runtime licenses of commercial applications developed with the SDK.

The Chinese jailbreaking team Pangu has just released a software that allows Apple users to jailbreak their mobile devices using  iOS 8 and iOS 8.1.

Pangu has just released an application that allows Apple users to jailbreak their mobile devices, including iPhones, iPads, iPods and second-generation Apple TV.

Jailbreaking an Apple device, it is possible to remove any limitations on iOS proprietary services provided by Apple by default and install third party untrusted App repositories like Cydia. Remember installing such kind of Apps on your iOS device may have its inherent advantages but you are also at risk if the version of jailbreak they use is compromised.

The Pangu team is the same group of developer that published the jailbreaking software for iOS 7 a few months back, security experts are surprised by the rapidity with which it has been released the new jailbreak.

The software released by the Pangu team is effective on devices running the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 8 and iOS 8.1 but is available as of now only for Windows operating systems. Further Pangu has said that, the current version of the  jailbreak iOS 8 tool is a developer edition and is not present in the Cydia app store, this means that the majority of iOS users cannot have it because cannot install unauthorized App as of now. Given that it is a developer version, it also is have to some bugs present.

The final version of Pangu iOS 8 jailbreak tool should be available soon.  This was confirmed by the Cydia developer, Jay Freeman (aka @Saurik), in a Reddit thread, that he is working on making it compatible with this jailbreak. 

We have definitely been working together, with lots of e-mails back and forth. I explained to them what was wrong with Substrate on boot, and they mostly fixed it; what was still not working I ended up sending them a patch to fix (after asking them for the source code to that tiny part of the untether). I have been working on the passcode issues (which were somewhat deeper than just "stashing", as tons of important files in /var were also ending up with the wrong data protection class) and have now finished fixing that (in a way that should upgrade anyone already using Cydia to a state where a passcode should be safe again just by installing the new Cydia package).

There are, however, a couple more key issues I need to fix in Cydia (such as the user's language setting being ignored). There are also some other unrelated issues in the untether that I forwarded to Pangu on behalf of some extension developers, which they have already fixed (but now need to be tested). I don't know much about the problems Pangu is working on.

Google Nexus 9 available in Google Play store in India just for Rs.28,900

Phillip Lechter claims iPhone 6 'caught fire and gave him second degree burns after bending in his pocket'

iPhone 6 is again in the news, this time for burning Phillip Lechter's leg.  Phillip Lechter claims that his all new iPhone 6 “caught on fire”, burning through his jeans and injuring his leg with second degree burns.  Phillip had given a detailed analogy of this accident on his blog and has even made a YouTube video about the incident, which is given below.

Phillip Lechter said he was visiting the University of Arizona with his family on 11 October when the rickshaw he was travelling in with his wife and seven-year-old son crashed. The rickshaw which also called a Pedicab struck a trolley track on the road and lost balance.  Phillip says that the rickshaw just tipped over but it rocked for the moment of impact, bending his brand new iPhone 6 as he was slammed into the side.

"I felt a burning sensation on my leg and then saw and smelled smoke from my pants.  I surveyed the rickshaw quickly and could not find anything that could have set me on fire.  Then it hit me, my phone was in my pocket.  Somehow in the process of the tipping of the rickshaw my new APPLE iPhone 6 had bent in my front pocket and caught on fire,"he wrote.

As the accident caught the eyes of the crowd, a passer-by threw a cup of water on Phillip's jeans to put out the fire.  He also adds that another passer-by who tried to pick up the burned iPhone 6 lying on the ground, burned his fingers.

Phillip immediate recorded a video after the accident so that he can pursue the case further with Apple for damages.  In the video, the iPhone 6 can be heard sizzling as ice is poured on it.

Phillip had pre-ordered the iPhone 6 and received deliver in the first batch of shipments in September. After the accident all that remained was smashed, blackened and warped iPhone 6 and a big burnt hole in his jeans pocket and boxers.

The accident also caused a second-degree burn four inches long on his leg that needed medical treatment and another on his hip from removing the phone.

Once we all calmed down we assessed the damage.   My APPLE iPhone 6 burned through my jeans pocket, through my boxers and significantly burned my leg.  In the process of removing the phone from my pocket I also burnt my hip.  The Doctor’s report described a 11.5 cm x 10.5 cm burn area on my right leg and classified the burn as 2nd degree with first degree burns surrounding the area. According to the Doctor, the burn will require cleanliness, antibiotics and pain management for treatment.    In the days since the event… include interruptions to my business, workout, and family life and the ‘freak out’ factor for all involved, he stated on his blog.

Apple has not yet commented on Phillips accident or given any official statement. But coming on the back of the “bend gate” controversy this is going to cause Apple some goodwill damage. The video taken by Phillip after the accident is given below :
