Ice age camel fossil bones discovered in Yukon provide DNA, shakeup camel family tree

Way back in 2008, miners recovered three fossils from a gold mine in the Klondike, Yukon. These were among the first Western Camel bones to be found in the territory or Alaska in decades.

For ages, scientists had believed that Western Camels, which once lived in North America were related to Llamas and Alpacas that are much common to South America; however with the discovery of these fossils scientists have got a genetic proof which indicates that the extinct animals were much more related to the Asian and Arabian camels.

A paleontologist with the Yukon's Department of Tourism and Culture, Grant Zazula, said: "For us, the gold is the fossils because it's this incredible resource for understanding extinct and ancient animals of the ice age."

These Ice Age Camel bones are now forcing scientists to redraw the lineage of the now-extinct species says Zazula.

Zazula further said that with this discovery scientists can now try to figure out what could have probably led to the extinction of these camels towards the end of ice age which is 13,000 years ago.

Over the past century, Paleontologists have tried to study camels using comparative anatomy, wherein they divided bones and fossils into two main branches of animals basically found in various regions such as Arab, Africa, Asia and the llamas and alpacas which are found in South America, said Zazula.

He further also added that earlier paleontologists believed that western camels were like "giant llamas" or "llamas on steroids".

The discovery of uncovered bones by the miners in 2008, during the process of hydraulic stripping of the earth actually forced the scientists to change their theory. These bones were preserved exceptionally well in the permafrost wherein they still held DNA, which is one of the rare occurrence in mineralized fossils.

Zazula said: "When that was found, we really couldn’t believe it because, like I said, there hasn’t been a camel bone found in over 30 years, and we knew they were so rare and it was so well preserved."

As per the report from Guardian, Zazula said that he sent small pieces of the bone to geneticists at the University of California Santa Cruz, which were later assisted by a statistician and a geologist.

The journal Molecular Biology and Evolution has published the findings of this study.

The news release regarding the DNA testing indicated that around 10 million years ago, western camels seems to have split off from the branch which includes modern camels. Though most of them lived in southern areas of North America, some might have made their way north during the warm period around the last ice age which is about 100,000 years ago. It seems these animals then remained in North America till the end of ice age when they actually went extinct.

"There's something pretty spectacular about holding on to a bone that's 100,000 years old that can tell us so much about the history of the past and the history of the land you live in," said Zazula. "I think that's pretty spectacular."

Zazula says that these findings would definitely make scientists re examine other species as well.

For the first time Scientists document how new concepts form inside brain

Scientists have researched how newly learned concepts form in the human brain by visualizing how new information gets filed. For the first time science has visually witnessed how and where the exact matter is coded inside the brain.

At Carnegie Mellon University researchers deduced to see what people were thinking about and how different new knowledge is stored and how combinations of different pieces of this fresh information affect different parts of the brain. The associated research is available in the journal Human Brain Mapping.

The scientists found that each individual had a specific 'brain activation signature' through Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI). It is an indication of the neural activity for the different animals.

Therefore, each person had specific 'habitat' regions in the brain that stored new information about where the animals lived and dedicated 'diet regions' where the newly learned knowledge about animal’s diet was stored.

Scientists used FMRI images to find out what animal each person was thinking about at any given time.

Neuroscientist “Marcel Just” used the example of the 2013 discovery of an “olinguito” which is a small South American carnivorous mammal. Those learning about the animal were able to immediately pickup new information for the first time, such as its habitat, diet, behavior, etc. Just explained “Millions of people read the information about the olinguito and by doing that they permanently change their own brains.”

When people came to know that the olinguito eats mainly fruit instead of meat, a region of their left inferior frontal gyrus- as well as several other areas—stored the new information according to its own code.

Just's paper also concluded that our brains all use a similar 'filing system' to process new information.

Just, PhD student and lead author Andrew Bauer gathered 16 study participants and examined their brain activity while teaching them new information about eight extinct species of animals. They observed the emergence of new concepts in their brains by using an MRI machine, as the hour-long ingestion of new information progressed.

The research which was earlier conducted in the field of brain imaging helped the team to understand more clearly from where certain bits of information would come up, such as animal’s habitat or its dietary habits. Each category illuminates a different part of the brain.

According to Just, “The activation signature of a concept is a combination of the different types of knowledge of the concept that a person has stored, and each type of knowledge is stored in its own characteristic set of regions.”

The team had a deeper knowledge of how the brain manages information. For example, new information does not obscure something learned five minutes ago. Instead, “Each time we learn something, we permanently change our brains in a systematic way,” Bauer explains.

While conducting the research, Carnegie Mellon merged two major research areas at the university. One deals with studying how brain architecture gives rise to complex behaviors and one dealing with increasing the effectiveness of student learning.

Just and Bauer claim that their results will be able to help develop more effective ways of teaching complicated subjects in school as well as shed light on how to reverse the loss of knowledge that accompanies disorders such as Alzheimer and dementia.

To begin with, login into your Facebook account, then click the down arrow in the upper-right corner and choose Activity Log. To go to your Facebook page, you can also click your name in the top bar and then click the "View Activity Log" button on the right side of the cover photo area.

At first, the Activity Log may look a little mind-boggling, as there might be thousands of entries to go through. However, Facebook has made it easier with a few tools.

There is a huge list of filters in the left-hand column. Only the posts about those topics would be shown in your Timeline. For example, to only view the posts that you have posted, you need to choose "Your Posts." You can also just look at "Photos," things you have "Liked" and "Comments" you have made on posts, photos and videos.

To see more filters, click the "More" link such as "Videos," "Groups" and "Location History." Location History is especially helpful if you used to be a little too free with telling people where you were.

One probably is not aware that Facebook tracks your search history. Anyone who gets access to your account can view everything and everyone that you have searched for on Facebook.

Look in the left column of the Activity Log to view your search history and click "More" under "Photos, Likes and Comments." Then click "Search" near the bottom of the list. To delete individual entries, you need to click the "circle with a slash" icon and select "Delete." To remove everything at once, you can also click "Clear Searches" at the top.

Since there is no way that can prevent Facebook from tracking your search history, so one would need to keep coming back to delete it if you want it to stop searching on Facebook or don't want it to get recorded.

You can also view what apps you have installed and what posts they have made on your Timeline at the bottom. To change the settings on who can view the posts the apps make, you need to go to top of the log.

Even though you may be fine with your Facebook friends viewing some of your embarrassing posts, you may not be ok to let strangers view something that you may have posted in the past. The reason for that could be that your privacy settings might not have been set correctly in the past.

It could take days to change every past post manually from "Everyone" to "Friends". Luckily, Facebook has a faster option. Click the upside-down triangle at the top of the page and choose Settings.

In the left-hand column, then click the "Privacy" link. Under "Who can see my stuff?" choose the "Limit Past Posts" link. Then, click the "Limit Old Posts" button to change the privacy setting of every post in your profile to "Friends."

One would have to keep in mind that the posts that you want everyone to view will change those as well. You will have to go to change those posts back to "Everyone" manually.

Next, go to your Facebook page and to the upper right, click the three dots next to the "View Activity Log" button and choose "View as..." This allows you to see your Facebook page the way a stranger would, or any Facebook user you choose. In this way, you can quickly locate problem posts and change their privacy settings or remove them.

"View as..." is particularly useful if you have set up custom lists. Lists let you select specific friends who can view certain posts.

Latest details released by WikiLeaks reveals a license agreement between Sony and Marvel defining the strict terms on Spider-Man's sexuality.

The Whistleblower website WikiLeaks released a set of fresh documents which contained 276,394 private files, emails and financial data onto its server and in this process it has released some shocking information from the last year's Sony hacks as well.

The fresh information leaked a legal licensing agreement between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment which reveals that Peter Parker and his alternate personality Spider-Man should be heterosexual and also Caucasian.

The news regarding licensing agreement was first reported by website Gawker; however Sony Pictures and Marvel representatives did not comment on this news.

The legal contract between Marvel and Sony went into effect in September 2011. In this the comic company Marvel Entertainment has specified certain 'mandatory' character traits of both Peter Parker and his alter ego-Spider-Man. Surprisingly the agreement includes a forewarning that Spider-Man is "not a homosexual (unless Marvel has portrayed that alter ego as a homosexual)."

It was in the year 1962 that the character of Peter Parker alias Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee, writer -editor and Steve Ditko, writer-artist. The then Spider-Man first appeared in "Amazing Fantasy #15" wherein he was shown to be an orphan who is raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. The character was portrayed as a teenager who deals with adolescence and is a costume crime fighter who displays super strength and agility, has the ability to clasp to most of the surfaces and can react to danger with his "spider-sense".

The mandatory Spider-Man traits listed by the agreement under "character integrity obligations" includes the following:
