All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi - A brief tour

When you think about the best place for medical facilities in India, which place comes to mind? Undoubtedly, it is AIIMS, Delhi. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences has, after years of perseverance become the greatest medical institution in the Indian subcontinent.

The Story

It was no easy task to set up a medical institute as huge as AIIMS, Delhi. Something most people do not realize, is that AIIMS, Delhi was set up in the early years of a sovereign India. A country that was yet to find its feet after independence. At such a time, it was nothing short of a miracle for a country to manage to set up such a medical institution of this scale. The early Indian government should be lauded for making it possible for setting up these institute so early on in the history of the country. And we, the later generations have been fortunate enough to enjoy the facilities that they made, keeping us in mind.

It was not easy for the then government to set up an institute that will go on to become the benchmark for institutes in its class, let alone a medical institute of the same pedigree. The foundation stone of AIIMS, Delhi was laid only after the New Zealand government agreed to fund the institute.  A generous grant from the New Zealand under Colombo Plan made it possible to lay the foundation stone of AIIMS, Delhi in 1952. The construction was finally completed in the year 1956. This institute was a dream of the great Jawaharlal Nehru and Amrit Kumar.

AIIMS was set up as a completely autonomous institution in 1956. This was made possible under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956. The institute is still governed by this act even today. An amendment to this bill was introduced recently in the Indian Parliament which would allow setting up of more institutes like AIIMS, Delhi across the country. Of course, this has been made with the intention of replicating the success that AIIMS, Delhi has enjoyed in the past few decades.

The Insitute

AIIMS Delhi is located at Ansari Nagar, Aurobindo Marg, New Delhi. It is spread over an area of more than 300 acres. The institute has facilities for teaching, research as well as patient-care. The patient-care facilities of AIIMS, New Delhi is the most sought after by the affluent in the country. The teaching facilities have also been recognized as the best in the country multiple times over the years. 

The Medical College

In an overall perspective, the institute offers multiple courses in Medical and Para-Medical branches all-in-all comprising of 42 disciplines.  In the field of medical research AIIMS has had the privilege of having more than 600 research topics published by their faculty researchers, which is no mean feat. The institute still manages to publish many research topics every single year.

Ever faced in a situation when you needed to get information about colleges and found yourself stumped? Maybe it was a friend, a peer, a teen from your neighbourhood or maybe your own relative who asked you for help and you did not know how to help them. Education counselling or college information was not available to everyone save a elite few.  Sahil Chalana realised this gap in information and moved to fill it with his startup Collegedunia. 

The Process

Sahil Chalana graduated from BITS Pilani in 2010 and started an education forms company titled getmyform.in that, unfortunately did not work out so he and his Co-founder parted ways. He took this as a learning lesson of life. At the same time he noticed the huge gap in the information demanded by students and the information available in the public domain.

As said above, the updates and news provided by colleges spread across India was scattered far and wide. Students desperately needed this information, especially during the pre-admission season which saw them running from pillar to post and at times making decisions with half information which may affect their future careers. Sahil decided to start CollegeDunia which collated all the information students needed at one common website.  Thus came into being the goto website for college students and knowledge resource.

They started it as an education classifieds and focussed on the smaller details like fests and hostels. These seem to be relatively minor information and for this very reason is not available anywhere. These small bits of information also make a huge difference to students before choosing the right college for themselves. The focus on the finer details lead them onto the path of success. And according to venture capital tracking website, VC Circle, Collegedunia managed to secure a fund raise of INR 1.00 crore from Gaadi.com’s CEO Umang Kumar, affiliate marketing company 3.14 Digital, and a few undisclosed investors. 

The Journey

Although, they were not creating a completely new market but they were indeed heading into a niche were right information was power. Also, they were heading into a territory with a sizeable competition with the likes of  Pagalguy.com, Jagranjosh, Careers360 already hitting success. Sahil though notes that none of them focus on curating content from colleges. 

“We go at great lengths to get our users the most detailed information which differentiates us from our competitors. One of the biggest learning I had from all this was that ventures fail but people who persist don’t,” says Sahil.

The graph of the company has since been in an upward spiral, whether it has been in revenue, team size or pace of working. They have grown so fast that they have had to move into a new office at Prashant Vihar, New Delhi with their team size increasing from 5 to 50. They have a team of 20 for content curating and editing, 17 for customer support, five handling technology, and four into marketing. The plan is to hire more people for marketing and design.

Collegedunia currently has information of approximately 15,000 colleges and exams like CAT, MAT, GMAT, GATE, etc. With external funds coming in, they are planning to expand their reach to 30,000 colleges and cover all the entrance exams happening in India by the end of this year, a very ambitious goal to achieve. 

Another Venture Capital tracking website, Your Story says that "Their success can be gauge from the fact that they had already crossed 1 million page views per month landmark in December 2014. Sounds high to us, but is low compared to the competition they are up against. On the other hand, the majority of these page views are by users accessing the site directly, which gives them the edge over competition." 

All in all, this startup story has been one of success and growth. It'll be an interesting story one to follow.

One of the leading online real estate marketplace - Lamudi.com launches its Android app last June 2014 for property seekers. Lamudi then rolled out an iOS app for house-hunters on November 2014 across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America since it was launched in June.

WhatsApp is now available for the Web, in a form that pairs the mobile version of the app to a user’s desktop computer. "Today, for the first time, millions of the users can use WhatsApp on your web browser," as said by WhatsApp on its official blog post.

To use WhatsApp you have to connect your web browser to WhatsApp client, the user has to open web www.whatsapp.com in her/his Google Chrome browser where you will see a QR code, scan the code inside of WhatsApp, and you're ready to go. You have now paired WhatsApp on your phone with the WhatsApp web client.

Setting up WhatsApp Web on your Google Chrome

The first step towards getting WhatsApp working inside your browser is to get the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, BlackBerry, Nokia S60, or Windows Phone.  As said above, iPhone is not the supported at the moment. To check what version of WhatsApp you are on, open the app, go to the menu (three dots/left menu key in advanced smartphones) ->Settings ->Help ->About.

If you have a old version kindly update to the latest version which comes with support for WhatsApp Web. Look for the WhatsApp Web option in the respective apps before proceeding further - the WhatsApp Web website tells you where to find the option inside each app. Android users, make sure you are running version 2.11.498 or later. 

Next, open the WhatsApp Web website on your desktop in Google Chrome.  Once the WhatsApp Web page finishes loading, you will see a QR code on the top left part of the screen. Now fire up WhatsApp on your mobile phone and select WhatsApp Web from the menu (three dots/left menu key in advanced smartphones).

Align the QR code with your phone's camera and, almost instantly, you'll find yourself staring at your recent WhatsApp conversations inside Chrome on the desktop. You can allow desktop notifications so that all the notifications come directly to your desktop but kindly remember you cant switch off WhatsApp on your smartphone or the data connection on your smartphone. The Desktop Google Chrome WhatsApp Web uses the smartphones WhatsApp connection to stay connected.

Another thing to note it that if you disconnect the WhatApp on the smartphone and reconnect it, the WhatsApp Web will automatically try to reconnect the desktop and the smartphone version again.  On my desktop it took 30 secs to reconnect again.

The desktop WhatsApp Web UI is a mirror image of WhatsApp smartphone so you will have no difficulty in managing it.  It took me only 1 minute to set it up.  The WhatsApp Web supports features like delivery and receipts and you can share images that are stored in your computer or clicking a fresh one through your webcam.  You can also send a voice message through the computer's microphone.

You can also start WhatApp Web on multiple computers but use only one at a time.

This one is worth trying if you are a WhatsApp fan and also cant find time to fish out your smartphone every time somebody WA's you a message while you are busy on your PC/Laptop.  WhatsApp has followed its mobile first principle by letting the phone control your sessions.

8. At first, it will install the driver and an error will prompt. All you have to do is to disconnect the phone and repeat the procedure in no. 6
9. After that, you now have successfully write the IMEI on your mediatek device

9. Locate the files inside NVRAM Warning Err=0x10 folder
10. Select both the files and click on MOVE or COPY
11. Now go back to data/nvram/APCFG/APRDEB and click on Paste
12. After pasting both the files, close Root Explorer and REBOOT your phone

Turn on your wifi to see if there will be no more NVRAM Warning.

INCREASING INTERNET PENETRATION CHANGING THE WAY ASIA DOES REAL ESTATE

As the number of internet users in the Philippines grew by 531%, online house-hunting is now more popular than traditional methods.

DECEMBER 2014: Real estate industries across Asia are moving online, with a new report revealing that online property search is on the rise across the region.

The findings are contained in a new report from global property website Lamudi into real estate in 16 emerging countries. The report, Real Estate in the Emerging Markets, covers six countries in Asia: the Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

The report, which is available in an easy-to-read web format, is based on a series of online surveys of house-hunters and real estate agents in each country. Extensive onsite data from Lamudi’s global network of websites was also used in the research.

The trend towards online property search is particularly pronounced in Indonesia, where 96 percent of agents surveyed by Lamudi said the Internet was now frequently used during the house-hunting process. Similarly, 90 percent of agents in the Philippines say the web is a commonly used tool among those looking for a new home. This is mainly due to the fact that the number of internet users in the Philippines grew by 531% in the last five years.

In countries such as Pakistan, where traditional methods of finding property such as newspaper classifieds remain the most popular, online real estate listings are quickly catching up. Nearly all those surveyed expected online property search to become more popular over the next decade.

In Myanmar, a country where Internet penetration stands at just 1 percent, the dynamics of the real estate sector are also changing. Sixty-five percent of agents surveyed said the Internet is sometimes used by house-hunters, while 29 percent said the web was often used. Moreover, 86 percent of agents surveyed expect to see an increasing number of house-hunters will switch online in the next 10 years, as the Internet becomes more widely available in the country.

Lamudi’s Global Co-Founder and Managing Director, Kian Moini, said: “With 2015 just around the corner, the report also highlights the phenomenal growth that we expect to see in Asia’s property markets in the coming months. This is largely due to strong economic growth, combined with an expanding middle class and increasing wealth, which are trends we are seeing across all Lamudi’s Asian markets.”

The highest growth is expected in Indonesia, where three-quarters of the real estate agents surveyed said they expected to see the property sector grow by eight percent or more during 2014. A similar result is also expected in the Philippines, where two-thirds of agents expect growth of eight percent or higher.

The report also examines differences in house-hunting habits across the region, revealing that affordability drives decisions about where to live in countries including the Philippines, Myanmar and Indonesia. In Bangladesh and Pakistan, house-hunters are more concerned about safety and security. While in Sri Lanka, location is top of mind for those in the market for a home.

The 16 countries covered in the report are: Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mexico and Colombia.

If the registered family member/friend calls twice and does not receive a response while trying to contact the passenger between 9 pm and 8 am, he will receive an SMS containing details of the passenger’s location.
