When you think about the best place for medical facilities in India, which place comes to mind? Undoubtedly, it is AIIMS, Delhi. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences has, after years of perseverance become the greatest medical institution in the Indian subcontinent.

The Story

It was no easy task to set up a medical institute as huge as AIIMS, Delhi. Something most people do not realize, is that AIIMS, Delhi was set up in the early years of a sovereign India. A country that was yet to find its feet after independence. At such a time, it was nothing short of a miracle for a country to manage to set up such a medical institution of this scale. The early Indian government should be lauded for making it possible for setting up these institute so early on in the history of the country. And we, the later generations have been fortunate enough to enjoy the facilities that they made, keeping us in mind.

It was not easy for the then government to set up an institute that will go on to become the benchmark for institutes in its class, let alone a medical institute of the same pedigree. The foundation stone of AIIMS, Delhi was laid only after the New Zealand government agreed to fund the institute.  A generous grant from the New Zealand under Colombo Plan made it possible to lay the foundation stone of AIIMS, Delhi in 1952. The construction was finally completed in the year 1956. This institute was a dream of the great Jawaharlal Nehru and Amrit Kumar.

AIIMS was set up as a completely autonomous institution in 1956. This was made possible under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956. The institute is still governed by this act even today. An amendment to this bill was introduced recently in the Indian Parliament which would allow setting up of more institutes like AIIMS, Delhi across the country. Of course, this has been made with the intention of replicating the success that AIIMS, Delhi has enjoyed in the past few decades.

The Insitute

AIIMS Delhi is located at Ansari Nagar, Aurobindo Marg, New Delhi. It is spread over an area of more than 300 acres. The institute has facilities for teaching, research as well as patient-care. The patient-care facilities of AIIMS, New Delhi is the most sought after by the affluent in the country. The teaching facilities have also been recognized as the best in the country multiple times over the years. 

The Medical College

In an overall perspective, the institute offers multiple courses in Medical and Para-Medical branches all-in-all comprising of 42 disciplines.  In the field of medical research AIIMS has had the privilege of having more than 600 research topics published by their faculty researchers, which is no mean feat. The institute still manages to publish many research topics every single year. 

Along with the regular courses for doctors in various fields, the institute has also set up a course dedicated to delivering top - notch nurses. The provide a specific Bachelors degree in nursing for this purpose. It is nice to see the premier institute in the country giving importance to nurses instead of ignoring them as lesser citizens of the medical fraternity.
